Cycle-Safe Bike Lockers Selected for
APWA Project of the Year - Hiawatha Light Rail
Twin Cities, MN - The 12-mile, $715.3 million Hiawatha Light Rail project addressed the problem of bicycle parking at 9 intermodal stations using Cycle-Safe Bike Lockers. In addition, the bike lockers are placed at 29 Park & Ride lots, bus stops, and other locations. Installing bike lockers is just one example of incorporating multi-modal options into transit facilities and contributing to a more balanced parking and transportation program. The Cycle-Safe locker design is aesthetically pleasing and expandable. They blend with the built environment of the station and are welcomed by an increasing population of cyclists. They offer commuters covenient storage and transportation connections. The bike lockers are located in well-lit areas for night travelers. The lockers efficiently protect bikes from uncontrollable situations such as inclement weather, theft or damage, in addition to eliminating the hassle of parking. The locks used for each locker are all tamper proof. The lockers have enough room to park the bike and helmet. They are a relatively low cost, quick-implementation measure that have significatly improved bicycle access at over 38 locations in the Metro Transit system.
